How to build a competitive Pro Clubs squad

Most Pro Clubs squads are five friends and a group chat. That's a fine way to enjoy the game, and a guaranteed way to lose to organized clubs. The gap between a casual squad and a competitive one isn't talent; it's structure. Here's how the clubs that win amateur leagues are actually built.

Roster size: the 1.6 rule

For every outfield slot you intend to fill with a human, you need roughly 1.6 registered players. Want to line up 8 humans consistently? You need 12 to 13 active members. This is the number casual clubs get wrong: they register exactly 8, two people have a work shift, and suddenly they're forfeiting or playing 6 against 8.

The upper bound matters too. Beyond about 15 active members for a single team, players who train and show up but rarely start begin to drift away. If you're consistently above that, it's time for a B team, which is also your development pipeline.

Recruit for attendance first, ability second

A 90-rated player who shows up half the time is worth less than an 80-rated player who never misses a match. In tryouts, you can evaluate mechanics in twenty minutes; what you can't see is reliability, so ask directly: which days can you play, what time zone, what other commitments (other clubs, ranked grinds) compete for your evenings?

Run tryouts inside real matches, not skill games. What you're looking for:

  • Do they hold their position, or do five players chase every ball?
  • Do they communicate (calls for the ball, marks, switches) without being prompted?
  • How do they react to going 0-2 down? The answer at minute 30 of a tryout is the answer at matchday 8 of a league.

Cover positions with doubles, not elevens

You don't need a specialist for all ten outfield positions. You need:

  • A dedicated goalkeeper if you can find one. A good human keeper is the single biggest competitive edge in Pro Clubs, and the rarest recruit. If you can't, decide your ANY-keeper policy and practice with it.
  • Two reliable center-backs who like defending. Not failed strikers serving a sentence, people who genuinely enjoy the timing game.
  • A defensive midfielder who never abandons the zone. The most undervalued role: the entire counterattack-prevention plan is this one player's discipline.
  • Flexible attackers. Wingers, strikers and attacking mids can rotate roles match to match with little cost. Defensive positions can't.

The practical target: every position has a starter and at least one person who can play it acceptably.

Set a rotation policy before anyone is angry

The conversation every club postpones until it explodes. Decide and announce in advance:

  • Does the strongest XI always start, or does everyone who attends get minutes?
  • Who decides, the captain alone, or captain plus a co-captain?
  • How are league matches versus friendlies treated differently?

There's no wrong answer, but there is a wrong method: deciding case by case under pressure. Competitive clubs usually land on "best XI for league matches, guaranteed minutes in friendlies and cups", sustainable as long as it's said out loud on day one.

The captain's real job

In-game leadership is the visible 20%. The invisible 80% that determines whether the club survives:

  • Confirming attendance 24 hours before every match. Post it on the club's Wall or in the chat and let everyone reply there instead of chasing people one by one. Zero-effort, prevents most no-show crises.
  • Handling the league admin relationship: reporting scores, flagging schedule conflicts early, knowing the rulebook better than anyone.
  • Tracking the squad's numbers across matches, who's trending up, who's burning out. The club's stats page on TransferPlay already tracks form and ratings match after match, so selection conversations can run on data instead of feelings.
  • Managing exits. People leave: work, family, new games. A club that handles departures gracefully keeps its alumni as friends and future returnees; one that turns exits into drama loses two players for every one that leaves.

Chemistry is a training schedule, not a vibe

One fixed training night per week, same day, same time, beats occasional five-hour weekend marathons. What actually improves in training isn't mechanics (players grind those alone in ranked); it's the collective patterns: the offside trap timing, who presses when, corner routines, what to do in the two minutes after conceding. Those patterns are exactly what separates clubs that win leagues from squads of talented strangers.
